Product certifications based on Official Mexican Standards and Mexican Standards

In Mexico, conformity assessment is both mandatory and voluntary according to specific scenarios. It is mandatory when an Official Mexican Standard (NOM) applies to the product to be evaluated. It is voluntary when a Mexican Standard (NMX) applies. UL is an independent organization approved according to current Mexican legislation to carry out any of these certifications. In the fire protection industry, there are some Official Mexican Standards, particularly for those elements or devices that operate with electrical energy. There are also Official Mexican Standards that govern wireless communication between these devices. These standards are:

  • NOM-001-SCFI Electronic Devices-Safety requirements and test methods.
  • NOM-003-SCFI Electrical Products-Safety Specifications.
  • NOM-019-SCFI Security of data processing equipment
  • NOM-218-SCFI Digital interface to public networks (digital interface at 2 048 KBIT / S and at 34 368 KBIT / S).

Our services range from determining the safety standard applicable to the product to the Verification process. Certificates and / or opinions are issued under the certification modality or scheme applicable to each standard.

Life safety and security

Fire equipment

UL Fire Equipment Services offers the unique capability to test in-service fire equipment for entire jurisdictions. Our field engineers perform aerial and ground ladder inspections and pump testing for fire departments to help ensure the safety of firefighters and the people they’re tasked to protect. We are committed to the advancement of fire safety science, and so we extend our services beyond basic testing of standardized equipment to provide technical expertise, testing and certification for apparatus prototypes and fire safety innovations.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Everyday firefighters, hazardous material response teams and industrial workers around the world rely on their training and PPE to guard against the hazards associated with their work. To help you comply with the regulations, which work to reduce the risk of injury due to fire, falls, chemical exposure and other physical hazards, we can certify PPE and apparel to the highest standards for safety and performance.

UL tests PPE for compliance to ANSI/NFPA, ASTM, CAN/CSA, CAN/CGSB, ANSI/ISEA and EN/ISO standards. Third-party certification is necessary to achieve compliance with many of these compliance standards. The UL Mark is widely recognized and respected as a symbol of certification to the highest standards of safety and can provide a competitive edge within the PPE market.

Fire, Smoke and Gas Device Certification Services

Whether it’s a home, business or place of assembly, advanced fire, smoke and gas detection technologies are ever-present to alert you in the event of a fire or other emergency. Not only are these devices becoming more interconnected and integrated with other systems, but also they are growing more sophisticated. This means they are designed to provide earlier detection of an event. Additionally, they are fault tolerant and more resilient in wide-ranging operating environments.

Our training, advisory, testing, inspection and certification services for fire, smoke and gas detection technologies help you get compliant products to the market faster.

Personal flotation devices

We offer certification for personal flotation devices (PFDs) in accordance with various certification standards in many countries. In order to meet federal carriage requirements in the U.S. and Canada, we work with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Transport Canada (TC) to approve devices that are intended to be used on both commercial and recreational vessels. These include life jackets, vests, seat cushions, deck suits and other types of flotation devices.

We are an accepted independent testing laboratory for PFDs in accordance with the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), 46 CFR. We’re also an accredited Notified Body and International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC)-accredited test house for the Personal Protective Equipment Directive for life jackets, buoyancy aids and immersion suits. Additionally, we’re an accredited Notified Body and ILAC-accredited test house for the Marine Equipment Directive for Europe for life jackets, life buoys, immersion suits and thermal aids.

If your needs extend beyond our certification services, we provide research-only testing and Verification claims testing as well.
